NSW Scholarships

For Dependent Children and Spouses

Naval Special Warfare Scholarships are offered to dependent children and spouses of active duty SEALs or SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant Crewmen) and other active duty military personnel currently serving in NSW commands. Those starting college or continuing college, full-time or part-time, with the goal of graduating with an Associates or a Bachelors degree will be considered.

Dependent Children and Spouses: Annual grants will be awarded on Merit and Academic Potential supported by scholastic achievement and a written essay. NSW Scholarships are awarded for one year, but qualified applicants may reapply every year.

Special Cases: The Scholarship committee will always consider awarding scholarships grants to family members of a SEAL or SWCC who died while serving his country and to NSW families in equally challenging situations.

The Scholarship committee will determine the number of NSW Scholarships awarded and amount of each grant.

UDT-SEAL Scholarships and the Had Richards UDT-SEAL Memorial Scholarship

The Scholarship committee will determine the number of UDT-SEAL Scholarships awarded and amount of each grant. The Had Richards UDT-SEAL Memorial Scholarship is $1,000.00.

NOLS-NSW Scholarship

The NSW Foundation is initiating a new scholarship with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Two $3,000 scholarships are being offered for the recipient to attend any one of a variety of courses offered by NOLS.

NOLS, a non- profit founded in 1965, educates novice students and trains leaders for other wilderness programs. NOLS focuses on developing outdoor skills and competence, as well as leadership skills to prepare students to lead their peers in the outdoors. With headquarters in Lander, WY, NOLS has bases of operations in the Rockies, the Pacific North West, the Yukon, Alaska, the Southwest, Mexico, Chile, Australasia and Patagonia.

This year the initial scholarship is sponsored by NavySEALS.com, a premier web destination for Special Operations enthusiasts which offers recruiting information, Special Operations community discussions, a daily news service, and a variety of other services. Mark Divine, a SEAL and Commander in the Navy Reserve and President of NavySEALS.com, has generously offered to sponsor this scholarship. Mark believes that sponsoring the NSW-NOLS scholarship will support the NSW community by encouraging family members to undertake the type of leadership and character development that NOLS courses offer.

NOLS offers a wide variety of courses covering a broad range of interests, year round. The courses are small, normally twelve to fifteen students with two to four instructors All courses demand focus and discipline, and the willingness to sacrifice one’s personal pleasures and needs for the group in austere, isolated, and pristine outdoor environments. NOLS calls this working together for the good of the group ‘expeditionary behavior.’ Leadership opportunities in a NOLS course are inescapable – everyone leads at some level and during some phase of the course. NOLS promotes seven leadership values: Expeditionary Behavior, Competence, Communication, Judgment and Decision making, Tolerance for Uncertainty, Self Awareness, and Vision and Action. NOLS teaches skills to not just survive, but also to thrive and thoroughly enjoy the course environment, whether the course be sailing, mountaineering, glacier travel, rock climbing, kayaking, or backpacking.

NOLS is considered the “Gold Standard” in outdoor education and was recently ranked the #1 outdoor adventure program by Outside Magazine. NASA regularly contracts with NOLS to develop teamwork in their space shuttle crews. Last year 74 midshipman and new graduates from the Naval Academy participated in NOLS courses within the Naval Academy’s Character Internship program. NOLS instructors are extremely well trained and experienced in facilitating groups of students in developing leadership and teamwork. NOLS courses are characterized by a high instructor to student ratio, well coordinated and effective logistics support, and an outstanding safety record. More information about NOLS can be found at their web site www.nols.edu

Applicants must be aware that, depending on the course selected, additional costs could be significant – to include travel and equipment rental. Enrollment and getting selected is the responsibility of the student. Since many summer NOLS courses fill up, early application for the desired course is recommended, prior to notification of scholarship board results. The scholarship is open to dependent children SEALs or SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant Crewmen) who are active duty or who have been members of the UDT-SEAL Association for the last three consecutive years and the current year - 2005 through 2008. In order to be eligible, applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 24 years old (different courses are available for different age groups) and must attend their NOLS course within 18 months of the date of their notification of selection. For more information on NOLS, visit www.NOLS.edu.
